Description
British, c.1870. An Anglo-Japanese rush-seat chair from the Aesthetic Movement period, showing the geometric balance and linear precision typical of early Japanese-inspired design in Britain. The ebonised frame is constructed with squared legs and lattice back rails joined by turned stretchers. The woven rush seat provides a natural contrast to the dark finish. This form reflects the influence of E. W. Godwin and the wider adoption of Japanese proportion and simplicity within domestic furniture of the 1870s.
