By William Birch for Liberty & Co, a pair of oak ladderback chairs aligned to the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), c.1895. The design uses slim turned uprights with ring turnings to the feet and finials, three shapely back rails, and woven rush seats. Birch’s High Wycombe shop supplied Liberty with well-made vernacular forms of this type, distinguished by lively turning, compact proportions and practical rush seating. Recently professionally re-rushed.
