By Liberty & Co, a pewter casket aligned to the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), c.1905. Rectangular body with straight sides and a flat over-sailing lid. The top is set with a square vitreous-enamel panel showing a Pre-Raphaelite-style maiden in profile, rendered in deep blue and green with auburn hair and a white cuff. The pewter is softly planished with fine hammered speckling, and the enamel sits in a neat square rebate that keeps the form crisp and rectilinear. Underside stamped TUDRIC 0586. The original hinge has been removed and the rim shortened evenly all around, so the lid now acts as a push-on lid.
Representations of the human figure are quite rare in Liberty Tudric pewter wares, particularly Pre-Raphaelite Maidens. Illustrated on page 30 of Liberty Style by Mervyn Levy. The enamel is good.
