Arts and Crafts c.1900 Walnut Circular Mirror with Stylised Floral Carved Decoration

£1,800

An Arts and Crafts circular mirror in solid walnut, the broad frame finely carved in relief with stylised Morning Glory motifs. The continuous floral design is executed with rhythmic precision, its intertwining stems and open blossoms arranged in a naturalistic yet ordered composition typical of late nineteenth-century carving workshops. The deep surface modelling gives the wood a lively play of light and shadow, while the original mellow walnut patina enhances the sense of depth and craftsmanship. Such mirrors reflect the ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement, in which ornament was derived from nature and handwork was celebrated as a mark of integrity. The combination of flowing organic decoration and strong circular geometry conveys both the vitality and restraint characteristic of British domestic design around 1900.
