A Highly Important Museum-Quality Fireplace and Matching Panelled Room
Exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878, winner of a Gold Medal.
Made by George Trollope & Sons.
A complete cedar-carved boudoir (petit salon) by George Trollope & Sons, exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878 and awarded a Gold Medal for Excellence. This is not simply a fireplace suite, but an architectural interior: four sides of panelling arranged around a Rosso Antico marble chimneypiece and cedar display niche, with doors, shelving, windows and mirror bays that can be configured to suit different room plans. Conceived for world-fair display, the carving has a deliberate sense of rhythm and theatre, with deep mouldings and Corinthian columns crowned by cherub-filled capitals. Original exhibition labels survive to the rear of the panelling, grounding the suite’s provenance in the practical realities of its 1878 installation and underscoring its rarity as a complete, museum-quality ensemble.
