Wylie & Lochhead, attributed. A Glasgow-Style Arts & Crafts Oak Magazine Rack
£750
Wylie and Lochhead attributed
This Arts & Crafts oak magazine rack was made around 1910 and reflects the firm’s engagement with the Glasgow Style. Tall and slender in form, it is arranged with three graduated “waterfall” compartments designed for the storage of magazines or papers. The stylised cut-out handle to the top and the shaped side profiles add a distinctive decorative touch while maintaining the clean geometry associated with Glasgow design.
Constructed in oak with a darkened finish, the rack shows the emphasis on functional domestic furniture that characterised the firm’s production in the early 20th century. The interplay of simple lines with subtle detailing demonstrates the balance of utility and style that defined Wylie & Lochhead’s work within the wider Arts & Crafts Movement.
