Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo

Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo (1851–1942) was a pioneering English architect and designer who played a significant role in the Arts and Crafts Movement and is often regarded as a forerunner of Art Nouveau. In 1882, he founded the Century Guild of Artists with Herbert Horne, aiming to integrate art into everyday life and elevate the status of decorative arts. Mackmurdo's designs, such as the 1883 title page for Wren's City Churches, featured sinuous, organic lines that anticipated Art Nouveau aesthetics. His architectural works, including the house "Brooklyn" in Enfield, showcased innovative features like flat roofs and horizontal windows, influencing modernist architecture. Through his multidisciplinary approach, Mackmurdo bridged traditional craftsmanship with modern design principles, leaving a lasting impact on the evolution of decorative arts.
