Josef Hoffmann

Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was an influential Austrian architect and designer, widely regarded as a central figure in the development of modern design in Europe. A founding member of the Vienna Secession and co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte, Hoffmann promoted a unified approach to art, architecture, and design that combined fine craftsmanship with geometric clarity. He studied under Otto Wagner and soon developed his own distinct style, characterized by clean lines, repeated patterns, and elegant simplicity. Hoffmann designed furniture, metalwork, textiles, ceramics, and entire interiors that reflected a shift away from historical ornament toward functional beauty. His work often featured high-quality materials and impeccable construction, and many of his pieces were produced in collaboration with skilled artisans and forward-thinking manufacturers such as J. and J. Kohn. Hoffmann’s contributions helped lay the foundation for the modernist movement and remain highly influential in the history of decorative arts and design.
