Robert (Mouseman) Thompson

Robert Thompson (1876–1955), known as the "Mouseman," was a British furniture maker celebrated for his handcrafted oak furniture and signature carved mouse motif. Based in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, Thompson established a workshop that followed the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, emphasizing traditional joinery, solid materials, and the integrity of hand craftsmanship. His work is instantly recognizable for its robust construction, clean lines, and the small, carved mouse that appears on nearly every piece. Thompson began using the mouse symbol in the 1920s as a personal trademark, which later became a hallmark of quality and individuality. His workshop produced a wide range of domestic and ecclesiastical furniture, from tables and chairs to pews and lecterns, often featuring adzed surfaces and pegged joints. The Mouseman legacy continues through the workshop he founded, which remains active today, and his work is widely collected and admired for its honesty, durability, and distinct character.
