James Dixon and Sons

James Dixon and Sons was a leading British silversmithing and manufacturing firm based in Sheffield, active from the early 1800s into the 20th century. Founded in 1806, the company became one of the most respected producers of silver, silverplate, pewter, and Britannia metal goods. It was known for its wide range of high-quality domestic and ecclesiastical items, including tableware, candlesticks, flasks, trophies, and tea services. James Dixon and Sons also produced designs by some of the era’s most progressive figures, including the influential designer Christopher Dresser. Their products combined fine craftsmanship with industrial innovation, and the firm's hallmark, often featuring a trumpet with the initials JD&S, is widely recognized by collectors today. The company exhibited internationally and played a key role in shaping British metalwork during the Victorian period and into the early modern age.
