In the Style of Daniel Cottier – Aesthetic Movement Dark Oak Coal Box

£1,800

Coal box in dark oak, made in the style of Daniel Cottier during the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), c.1870. The sloping front and sides are enriched with shallow carved floral decoration within geometric framing, the composition reflecting the linear naturalism typical of early Aesthetic design. The front panel lifts forward to reveal a practical storage compartment for coal or kindling.

The design is closely aligned with the decorative vocabulary of Daniel Cottier, the Scottish artist and designer who promoted the Aesthetic ethos through furniture, stained glass, and painted interiors. This example shares the stylised botanical carving and formal restraint associated with Cottier’s workshop production, combining Gothic structure with the refined ornamental sensibility that helped define the British Aesthetic Movement.
