Benham & Froud, Designed by Dr C. Dresser – Gothic Revival Oak Coal Scuttle
£2,200
Made by Benham & Froud and designed by Dr Christopher Dresser, this oak coal scuttle expresses late Gothic Revival taste, c. late 19th century. The faceted oak carcass stands on block feet with moulded rails; the sloped lid and front are worked with stylised floral iron straps and a central rosette boss. A sturdy carrying handle and broad hinge plates complete the functional, architectural look.
The mixture of honest oak joinery with simplified iron ornament is consistent with Dresser’s approach to domestic metalwork for Benham & Froud in the 1870s–80s. The piece is a practical fireside container while carrying strong sculptural presence on the hearth.
