In the Style of Gio Ponti – Mid-Century Modern Armchair c.1960
£600
Armchair in steel and upholstered fabric, in the style of Gio Ponti, from the Mid-Century Modern period (1950–1970), c.1960. The design features a curved backrest with roll-over arm panels and splayed tubular legs in blackened steel. The seat and back retain their original red textured upholstery, giving the chair both sculptural presence and comfort.
The form reflects the Italian Modernist principles Gio Ponti helped define during the postwar years. The interplay of angular geometry and soft upholstery typifies his influence on commercial furniture design of the 1950s and 60s, where craftsmanship and industrial production achieved aesthetic balance. This example follows Ponti’s approach to lightness, combining structural clarity with expressive colour.
