Heal’s of London, Attributed – Arts and Crafts Oak Lattice Back Side Chair
£700
This side chair in oak sits in the later Arts & Crafts (1880–1910) tradition, c.1920, British. A rectilinear lattice of four squares rises within the back over a tight drop-in rush seat. The frame is pared to essentials, with square legs, crisp shoulders and straight stretchers giving a compact, serviceable scale for dining or writing.
The attribution to Heal’s rests on the vocabulary and build: squared members with right-angle joinery, the gridded back common to Heal’s vernacular ranges, and the continued use of rush seating the firm championed for its honesty and comfort. The clarity of line and absence of superfluous carving are consistent with Ambrose Heal’s house style, carrying Arts and Crafts ethics into practical interwar retail furniture.
