James Plucknett Attributed for Collier & Plucknett – Anglo-Japanese Chair
£1,750
This Anglo-Japanese ebonised side chair is attributed to James Plucknett and was probably produced by Collier & Plucknett around 1880. The design reflects the Aesthetic Movement (1870 – 1890) fusion of Japanese geometry with English vernacular craftsmanship that characterised Plucknett’s decorative work during the late Victorian period.
The chair has an ebonised frame with a stepped and reeded backrest formed of intersecting horizontal rails above a squared seat supported on turned front legs and plain rear uprights. The cross-stretchers are joined in an angular configuration typical of Anglo-Japanese construction. The seat is re-upholstered in a braided green floral textile, complementing the dark finish and referencing patterns popular within the Arts and Crafts circle.
Comparable Anglo-Japanese side chairs by Collier & Plucknett and related firms are discussed in Jeremy Cooper, Victorian and Edwardian Furniture and Interiors (Thames & Hudson, 1987). The piece remains in good structural condition with light surface wear consistent with age.
