Jas Shoolbred & Co.,s Pair of Aesthetic Movement Side or Dining Chairs
£1,250 / set
A pair of side chairs by Jas Shoolbred & Co. (active c.1820–1931), reflecting the refined restraint of the Aesthetic Movement. Each chair has a rectilinear back with closely spaced horizontal rails that create a light architectural grid above a framed drop-in rush seat. The hardwood frames show neat workshop discipline: square back uprights, turned front legs raised on small pads, and a network of side and H-stretchers that provide rigidity while keeping the silhouette open. The clean arrangement of rails and the natural texture of the woven seats express the period’s preference for simple construction enlivened by thoughtful proportion and honest materials. As a London firm supplying high quality furniture to progressive interiors in the later nineteenth century, Shoolbred balanced practicality with elegant line, and this well preserved pair would have served either as compact dining chairs or as occasional seating within an artistically furnished room.
