John Moyr Smith for Mintons. A set of eight printed earthenware tiles with a white glazed ground, each depicting a scene from Shakespeare’s plays within a circular frame surrounded by Gothic text and stylised borders. Designed by John Moyr Smith and produced by Mintons at Stoke-on-Trent, these tiles combine fine transfer printing with occasional hand-tinted details. They exemplify the union of narrative art and decorative design characteristic of the Aesthetic Movement and the Arts and Crafts ideals of the late Victorian period.
