Liberty & Co. In the Style of G. M. Ellwood – Arts and Crafts Walnut Armchair
£2,200
This armchair in walnut sits within the Arts and Crafts (1880–1910) tradition, c.1900, British, by Liberty & Co in the Ellwood idiom. The back centres on a circular roundel with stylised line inlay, above a narrow stick splat with a single inlaid drop. Slim uprights rise just proud of the top rail. Scroll-ended arms return to simple posts, the drop-in seat upholstered, the frame carried on round legs joined by H-stretchers for poise and strength.
Rounded sections, crisp shoulders, and a stretchered base that keeps the profile light. Decoration is limited to the roundel and linear inlay, allowing the walnut to carry colour and figure without excess. The proportions are upright yet functional, suited to a writing desk or drawing-room setting where clarity of line matters as much as ornament.
George Montague Ellwood’s work for Liberty & Co favoured slim members, circular motifs set as calm focal points, and restrained inlay that guides the eye while keeping the structure clear. This chair follows that language closely, the roundel, stick back, scroll arms and disciplined geometry aligning with Liberty’s programme around 1900.
