M. H. Baillie Scott In the Style of – Arts and Crafts Cast Iron Fireplace
£1,400
This fireplace in cast iron sits within the Arts and Crafts (1880–1910) tradition, c.1900, British, in the manner of M. H. Baillie Scott. The composition is tall and narrow with a shallow arched opening set beneath a deep frieze. The upper panel carries two stylised spiral roundels, the edges worked with a fine bead, and the uprights rise as plain columns so the whole reads as a simple architectural frame rather than heavy ornament. The design is spare and graphic, relying on proportion, shallow relief and a disciplined outline that is consistent with Baillie Scott’s preference for quiet surface and strong geometry in domestic metalwork.
The scale suits a modest city chimney breast while giving good height above the opening for overmantel or mirror. Relief is kept shallow so light picks across the black surface and the mouldings register clearly at a distance. Side margins are plain, allowing for simple tiling or painted wall either side without visual conflict.
Requires a wooden mantlepiece to be made, and stripping and refinishing recommended (priced accordingly)
