Set of four dining chairs in oak, of the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), c.1900. The group forms a compact suite intended for domestic dining or a modest dining hall and demonstrates the period preference for upright, rectilinear seating with modest decorative carving.
Each example is composed of a high, pierced backrail with a rectangular central splat carrying a carved stylised floral motif, a slender top-rail and squared stiles. The seat is upholstered and sits above straight front legs and rear supports joined by plain side stretchers and a plain H-stretcher; the overall treatment favours linearity and restraint over heavy ornamentation.
Within the context of British Arts and Crafts practice these chairs exemplify a vernacular approach to ornament, combining simple structural logic with pared-back carving. The set is suitable where a unified, period seating group is required.
