Thornton and Downer Attributed – Arts and Crafts Cotswold School Steel Fire Dogs
£1,800 / set
By Thorten and Downer, attributed, a pair of fire dogs in steel, aligned to the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), c.1900, in the Cotswold School idiom. Each has a tall upright with rolled scroll finial above a twisted stem and a low billet arm for the logs. Surfaces show hand working, with decorative chasing to select areas and a practical rectangular foot that sits cleanly on the hearth.
Form and detailing are consistent with Cotswold School metalwork of the period. The scroll tops give a restrained flourish, while the straightforward construction, visible forging and balanced proportions keep the focus on function.
