POA
Edward William Godwin, attributed. made by William A & S. Smee
An Anglo-Japanese walnut spindle back armchair with cloud-style decoration to the top. The cloud shape detail to the top is comparable to chairs in Soros, Susan Weber 'The Secular Furniture of E. W. Godwin,' p. 112.
Professionally reupholstered leather seat. Metal makers label beneath the seat for William A & S. Smee, 89 Finsbury Pavement, London. Godwin designed for William A & S. Smee; his designs were exhibited by Smee at the Furniture Trades Exhibition in 1883. See Azlin, Elizabeth 'E. W. Godwin', London: John Murray, p. 22.
