Arthur Simpson of Kendal – Arts and Crafts Oak Chest of Drawers
POA
This Arts and Crafts oak chest of drawers by Arthur Simpson of Kendal was produced around 1900, reflecting the intellectual craftsmanship that defined the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910). Constructed in richly figured quarter-sawn oak, the chest reveals Simpson’s mastery of proportion and his belief that ornament should arise naturally from structure and material.
The design comprises two short drawers over three long, each fitted with hand-forged writhen iron handles retaining their original patina. The minimal decoration allows the quality of the timber and the precision of the joinery to dominate. Simpson’s Kendal workshop supplied furniture to leading architects including C. F. A. Voysey and Baillie Scott, uniting northern craftsmanship with the ideals of design reform emerging from London and the Lake District.
