Art Nouveau Carved Walnut Inlaid & Glazed Salon Cabinet by Louis Majorelle
POA
An Art Nouveau carved walnut, inlaid and glazed salon cabinet, with stylised floral carved details to the crown, features a central glazed cupboard with bevelled glass doors flanked by three shelves to each side. It has a lower central carved support fixed below a white marble area, leading to a further carved frieze and Art Nouveau inlaid peacock style scroll details on Maple veneers behind. The cabinet has a waist shape back with carved leaf detail terminating in carved blooming florets, and a lower display area with an almost conforming Maple inlaid back, standing on carved cabriole legs.
Modelled on an almost identical suite he exhibited at the 1901 Paris Exposition. See Duncan, Alastair Louis Majorelle: Master of Art Nouveau Design; London 1991, p. 111 for a contemporary photograph of a similar bedroom suite included in the Majorelle display at the Exposition Universelle, Paris, 1900. (Please note some of the images are a little dusty.)
