About this piece
Probably made by Collinson & Lock
An Anglo-Japanese Satinwood sideboard with a broken pediment centred by a small central carved bracket and an upper display shelf with dentil mouldings below. Asymmetrical Japanese shelves to the centre with cloud cut-outs to the shelf supports and plush blue velvet to the back, two small drawers below. A pair of astragal glazed doors with period hand made Japanese Kumuko latticework decoration inside to the glazed side panels.
Below breaks forward with a moulded edge with fluted moulded detail all around, four doors below have conforming stylised gilded brass handles, the central pair of doors are inlaid with floral garlands, urns and ribbons, two further doors inlaid with ribbons, pipes and garlands, above a central open display with turned uprights and floral fretwork arched details, two drawers with gilded brass handles, and further display below, raised on fluted square uprights with arched details to the backs making part covered in compartments. Raised on shaped bracket feet.
The broken pediment, dentil mouldings, Asymmetrical Japanese shelves with cloud cut-outs, astragal glazed doors all point to the influence of Godwin. A watercolor by Godwin annotated ''Patterns from draws of J bookcases'', held at the V&A is identical to the Japanese Japanese Kumuko latticework behind the glazed side panels, see image attached.
The last image is a drawing of a similar cabinet by Collinson and Lock exhibited at the 1878 Paris World Fair. See; Collinson and Lock by Clive Edwards Pg 65 Pl 3.32.
