E G Punnett Attributed for William Birch – Arts and Crafts Oak Bedroom Suite
POA
Attributed to E G Punnett for William Birch of High Wycombe, a three piece bedroom suite, Arts and Crafts Movement (1880–1910), c.1900.
The suite comprises a double wardrobe with two large drawers below, a matching dressing table with mirror, and a matching chest of drawers with an upper central square drawer, a form sometimes referred to as a Manchester chest. The pieces are unified by subtle chequer banding around selected drawer fronts and around the mirror frame, and all have matching stylised floral inlays of pewter with brass inlaid flower heads set in ebonized circles. The pewter disc and knob handles sit comfortably within the style of C F A Voysey.
Literature: Pauline Agius, British Furniture 1880–1915, Antique Collectors Club, 1978, p.120, illustrating the dressing table and a related washstand (reference as provided).
