Art Nouveau Dutch or German Mantle Clock with Inlaid Floral Decoration (c.1900)
£1,800
An Art Nouveau mantle clock in the Nieuwe Kunst or Jugendstil style, with inlaid floral decoration, brass dial, and probable French 8-day pendulum movement.
This Art Nouveau mantle clock was produced around 1900, reflecting the transitional idiom between Dutch Nieuwe Kunst and German Jugendstil design (1895 – 1910). The oak case is tapering in form, inlaid with scrolling floral marquetry, and raised on boot-shaped feet beneath an arched base.
The brass dial is engraved with stylised Arabic numerals arranged within circular reserves radiating from a central flowerhead, the pattern balanced by slender hands of matching metal. The controlled geometry of the design evokes the decorative rationalism characteristic of continental Art Nouveau workshops, in which linear ornament and botanical imagery were resolved into unified composition.
Within, the clock houses a probable French 8-day pendulum-regulated movement, fitted with an adjustable disc to the pendulum base for time regulation. The mechanism is accessed through a rear oak door, the interior retaining original pencilled markings consistent with early-twentieth-century service inscriptions.
