Glasgow School Patinated Brass Clock with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay c.1900
£1,100
Clock in patinated brass, of the Arts and Crafts Movement (1880–1910), within the Glasgow School style. The architectural body is tapered in profile with whiplash handles to the sides and mother-of-pearl inlaid squares to the front and base. The dial is raised in low relief with stylised numerals, characteristic of the sculptural treatment of surface developed by Glasgow designers around 1900.
The restrained use of ornament and the integration of geometric form with delicate inlay reflect the school’s balanced approach to structure and decoration. The rich patina softens the angular lines, while the inlay adds a cool, luminous contrast. A fine and representative piece of Glasgow School metalwork, uniting precision craftsmanship with expressive simplicity.
