G. M. Ellwood for J. S. Henry – Arts & Crafts Mahogany & Inlaid Cabinet
£3,200
Display cabinet in mahogany, of the Arts and Crafts Movement (1880–1910). Designed by George Montague Ellwood (1875–1955) for J. S. Henry (fl. 1890–1914), this example captures the refined proportion and clarity that defined their collaboration. The tall form combines a glazed upper section with fitted shelves above a recessed lower tier supported by slender uprights.
The front stiles are inlaid with stylised oval and floral motifs in lighter timbers, heightening the vertical rhythm of the design. The shelves are lined in soft green velvet, enriching the warm tone of the mahogany. Ellwood’s disciplined geometry and Henry’s cabinetmaking craftsmanship meet here in balance and restraint. Stamped ‘301’ over ‘4’, the cabinet typifies the mature phase of the Arts and Crafts movement, uniting transparency, structure and ornament with quiet confidence.
