By Bruce Talbert, probably for Gillows of Lancaster and London, side, dining or desk chair in walnut, aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), c.1880, English, Victorian. A rare, finely proportioned chair with a subtly curved back and incised line detailing to the uprights and seat rails.
The back is centred with a row of five turnings, surmounted by carved floral ornament above the seat, the whole raised on fine ring turned legs terminating in Thebes style feet, with sabre profile back legs, united by turned side stretchers. Retaining traces of original gilding, the shaping of the back gives this example a notably supportive, comfortable sit, and represents a more ergonomic and elegant example than Talbert’s more typical chair designs.
