Bruce Talbert for Gillows & Co – Aesthetic Movement Ebonised Walnut Side Chair
£2,200
Ebonised walnut side chair attributed to Bruce Talbert for Gillows & Co. c.1880, Aesthetic Movement, with turned details, incised stretchers, and leather upholstery.
This ebonised walnut side chair, attributed to Bruce Talbert for Gillows & Co., reflects the disciplined geometry and ornament of the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1900). The chair’s design balances sculptural restraint with finely incised linear decoration characteristic of Talbert’s idiom.
The shaped finials are united by a turned and incised upper stretcher, the back uprights defined by tramline carving adjacent to the padded leather backrest and seat. The front legs exhibit turned details and are joined by twin stretchers containing three finely turned and incised uprights, the form terminating in Thebes-style feet, a motif recurrent in late nineteenth-century interpretations of Egyptian Revival influence within the Aesthetic canon.
Professionally re-upholstered in brown leather, the seat and back are secured with staggered brass studs, preserving the original proportions and decorative rhythm intended by the designer.
