C Dresser for Colebrookdale Aesthetic Movement Cast Iron Garden Canopy Seat Ends

£4,000 £3,200

Louis Majorelle (1859-1926) was known for his Art Nouveau carved walnut, inlaid, and glazed salon cabinet. The piece features stylised floral carved details on the crown, a central glazed cupboard with bevelled glass doors, and three shelves on each side. Below the central support fixed under a white marble area is a further carved frieze and Art Nouveau inlaid peacock-style scroll details on Maple veneers. The cabinet has a waist-shaped back with carved leaf detail, ending in carved blooming florets. It also includes a lower display area with an almost conforming Maple inlaid back and stands on carved cabriole legs. This design is modelled on an almost identical suite that Majorelle exhibited at the 1901 Paris Exposition.

For a contemporary photograph of a similar bedroom suite included in the Majorelle display at the Exposition Universale, Paris, 1900, refer to Duncan, Alastair's book "Louis Majorelle: Master of Art Nouveau Design" (London 1991, p. 111). Please note that some of the images may appear a little dusty.
