Dr Christopher Dresser – Aesthetic Movement Walnut Coal Box with Brass Panels
£3,800
By Dr Christopher Dresser, a walnut coal box aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1900), c.1875. The trapezoidal carcass in solid walnut is set on short back feet with splayed fore-supports that continue from the front door. Uprights rise to a wooden cross-bar carry handle secured with exposed fasteners.
The angled front is mounted with a large shield-shaped brass cartouche with punched ground and raised scroll and seed motifs, the corners finished with small triangular brackets. Below sits a turned rod pull carried between shaped brass plates. The sides show strap hinges with quatrefoil terminal plates and domed rivets. Each fore-support is faced with a framed brass mount with a scalloped border and a vertical panel of stylised foliage.
The rear retains the original brass shovel in its clip, with a shell-moulded scoop and a turned wooden handle.
