E. W. Godwin
Anglo-Japanese Mahogany and Silk Fire Screen.

This fire screen in mahogany and silk is aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890) in its Anglo-Japanese mode, c.1870, British. The upright rectangular frame is raised on stepped block feet and surmounted by an open top rail with gently upturned terminals, giving the object a disciplined architectural outline.

The original Japanese silk panel depicts a river landscape with a bridge, trees, rocks and distant hills, held within a plain mahogany border. It was made for use beside the hearth, combining domestic function with the late nineteenth-century British taste for Japanese pictorial subjects and spare linear furniture.
