E. W. Pugin (Attributed) – Gothic Revival Oak Duet Chair with Wide Seat
£2,400
Duet chair in oak, attributed to E. W. Pugin, from the Gothic Revival period (1840–1880), c.1870. The broad seat and upright back are united by shaped side supports and arched stretchers, expressing Pugin’s disciplined interpretation of medieval structure. The frame is constructed with pegged mortise and tenon joints, while the later patterned upholstery reflects nineteenth-century ecclesiastical textile design.
Attributed examples of E. W. Pugin’s domestic furniture show similar integration of architectural logic and ornament, reflecting the continuity between his church commissions and household furnishings. The duet form, designed for two sitters, embodies the moral and social ideals central to the Gothic Revival philosophy, where craftsmanship and proportion convey spiritual order within the home.
