Oetzmann, After a Design by E. W. Godwin – Ebonised Upholstered Armchair
£1,500
An ebonised armchair made by Oetzmann, after a design by E. W. Godwin (1833–1886), dating to c.1885. The chair exhibits classic Anglo-Japanese influence, with spare vertical back posts, aligned structural geometry, and minimal ornament. The turned front supports and rails contrast with gently curved back splats, while a leather-upholstered seat and arm pads are secured with brass studs. The ebonised finish echoes Godwin’s preference for dark tonality drawn from Japanese lacquer traditions. Though made by a secondary workshop, the execution reflects the fine proportional discipline and aesthetic restraint emblematic of Godwin’s furniture design.
