Price on Application

This item is price on application due to its rarity and importance.

Edward William Godwin (1833 to 1886) for William Watt, this Anglo-Japanese side chair in walnut aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (c.1860 to c.1900), c.1880s.

The chair has a tall open back with a rounded top stretcher, set between shaped rear uprights that curve down through the full height of the frame. Below the top rail is a row of alternating plain and turned spindles.

The cane back is framed cleanly within the walnut structure, with five vertical spindles set below before the lower back rail. The seat is also caned and sits within a broad rectangular walnut frame, giving the chair a lighter and more open character than a fully upholstered example. The front legs are turned and incised, joined by a turned front stretcher and plain side stretchers, while the shaped back legs continue through four distinct curves, giving the chair its strong side profile.
