Liberty & Co. – Arts and Crafts Oak Armchair with Leather Cushion
£1,750
This Arts and Crafts oak armchair by Liberty & Co. was produced around 1895 and typifies the firm’s restrained yet architectonic approach to domestic furniture design during the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910). Constructed in solid oak with a rectangular back panel and stylised cut-outs to the side uprights, the chair retains its original green leather upholstery and brass studwork.
The design demonstrates Liberty’s synthesis of craftsmanship and commercial refinement. Its tall, structured form and pegged joints recall the Gothic Revival lineage that informed much of the company’s early production, while the clarity of proportion and honesty of construction align with the later Arts and Crafts ideals of Morris and Baillie Scott.
Liberty’s furniture makers sought to unite historical reference with modern simplicity, resulting in pieces like this that carry both aesthetic dignity and tactile warmth. The survival of the original label further affirms its authenticity and continuity of provenance.
