Liberty & Co – Arts and Crafts Oak Oblong Side Table
£1,800
This side table in oak sits within the Arts and Crafts (1880–1910) tradition, c.1890, British, and is by Liberty & Co. The oblong, gently shaped top with clipped corners has a slight overhang, set above square legs that splay outward to give the base a confident stance. Between the stretchers, a full undertier provides a useful surface while visually tying the frame together.
Construction is plain and purposeful, with square legs, framed stretchers, and a shelf housed cleanly within the rails. The plain sawn top lets the grain read across the surface. The outline does the work, light at the top, grounded by the broad undertier and the outward rake of the legs. It is Liberty & Co’s domestic language at this date, favouring straightforward joinery, serviceable proportions, and honest timber suited to drawing room or hall.
In the 1890s, the firm promoted simple, well-made furniture that read clearly in silhouette. This table follows that programme, balancing a practical lower shelf with a modestly shaped top so the piece carries presence without crowding a room.
