Liberty & Co. – Large Walnut Thebes Stool with Ring Turned Legs
£2,500
Thebes stool in walnut, of the Arts and Crafts Movement (1880–1910). Made by Liberty & Co. (established 1875–present), this large example displays the sculptural poise and precision turning that characterise the firm’s finest work. The square seat is covered in studded leather, lightly dished for comfort, the four legs ring turned in rhythmic sequence and joined by stretchers linking the legs on all sides to form a strong underframe.
Derived from ancient Egyptian prototypes, the Thebes design was adopted by Liberty & Co. as a symbol of their cosmopolitan aesthetic, bridging historical reference and modern craftsmanship. The stool’s walnut structure and dark polished finish convey both simplicity and refinement. It remains one of the most distinctive seating forms of the late nineteenth century, equally suited to a domestic interior or a museum setting.
