M. H. Baillie Scott Attributed – Arts and Crafts Oak Pierced-Back Chair
£1,600
By J. P. White of Bedford, attributed, to a design by M. H. Baillie Scott, an oak tall-back side chair aligned to the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), c.1905. The rectilinear back encloses a paddle-shaped panel pierced with a single round opening fitted with a ring. Square legs and rails form a box stretcher. The seat is hand-rushed. Surfaces show plain hand finishing with softened arrises and a functional geometry suited to domestic use.
Form and detailing sit within Baillie Scott’s chair vocabulary as produced by J. P. White. The tall rectilinear back, the single pierced motif with ring detail and the practical rush seat are characteristic of this workshop collaboration.
