Jeckyll for Barnard Bishop & Barnard – Aesthetic Movement Metal Fire Insert
£1,000
This fire insert in Iron sits within the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), c.1880s, British, designed by Thomas Jeckyll for Barnard Bishop & Barnard of Norwich. The frame is tall and narrow with ribbed uprights and a deep frieze panel of squares and roundels. Below, an arched opening sits within a stepped surround so the profile reads clearly against the hearth.
The decoration is graphic rather than ornate, the relief kept shallow to catch light across the blackened surface. Channels at each side allow for a run of tiles, although the piece can be used as it stands. Practical sizes are recorded on the plate, with an opening about 23½ inches high and 12 inches wide, suited to a modest fireplace.
