Wylie & Lochhead. Pair of Arts & Crafts Oak Side Chairs
£950 / set
Wylie & Lochhead
This pair of Arts & Crafts oak side chairs was produced by Wylie & Lochhead around 1905. Each chair is constructed with a tall rectangular back framing a broad central splat, the outline gently tapered towards the crest. The seats are finished with newly laid rush work, continuing the period preference for natural and durable materials in domestic furniture.
The restrained form, with its emphasis on proportion and clarity, reflects the wider ideals of the Arts & Crafts Movement, which sought simplicity of design and truth to construction. The verticality of the back and the understated shaping of the splat also align with the developing aesthetic of the Glasgow Style, where geometry and structural definition replaced excessive ornament. Functional yet refined, these chairs illustrate the enduring qualities of Wylie & Lochhead’s work in the early twentieth century.
