E. W. Godwin Attributed, Gothic Aesthetic Movement Oak Desk
Price on Application
This item is price on application due to its rarity and importance.
Attributed to E. W. Godwin, this desk in oak aligned to the Gothic branch of the Aesthetic Movement (circa 1860 to 1890), c.1870. The corners of the aprons below the work surface have subtle angled joints uniting the legs at the top, identical to the way the legs are united on Godwin’s Florence Cabinet, made by Art Furniture in 1871.*
The angled side supports below have bevelled edges and are mitred into the legs and also into the top rails below the drawers and side aprons. The upper legs have chamfered edges with bird beak end details and short turnings down to the feet.
The castellated shield style escutcheons are reminiscent of the escutcheons on the Ionides Cabinet, designed by Godwin for Luke Ionides in 1871, with triangular handle drops and diamond style back plates.**
