Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co – Aesthetic Ebonised Side Table with Jeddo Plates

£2,400

A side table in ebonised wood aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), 1880, combining a faux bamboo frame with inset Jeddo pattern ceramic plates by Brown-Westhead, Moore and Co, produced in England during the late Victorian taste for Japanese-inspired decoration in domestic furniture.

The circular top and lower tier are each set with a blue and white Jeddo pattern plate, the design built around a Japanese fan with dancing butterflies, exotic birds and sprays of flowers running into a wide foliate border. Slender faux bamboo legs splay gently towards the floor, visually tying the two tiers together and giving the table a light, vertical rhythm. The ebonised finish heightens the contrast between the dark frame and the pale plates, so the graphic ceramic decoration reads clearly when viewed from above.

Brown-Westhead, Moore and Co. worked at Cauldon Place in the Staffordshire Potteries, evolving from earlier Ridgway partnerships and becoming one of the district’s leading manufacturers of china and earthenware in the later nineteenth century. Their Jeddo pattern, produced around 1880, used Japanese motifs in blue and white transfer decoration that proved popular in export and home markets, placing this table within the wider story of Aesthetic Movement ceramics and furniture in Britain.
