Aesthetic Movement – Walnut Two-tier Side Table with Canted Corners (c.1885)
£1,400
Walnut side table, Aesthetic Movement, c.1885, two-tier with canted corners, ring-turned legs and shaped corner brackets beneath the upper tier.
This walnut side table, made during the Aesthetic Movement c.1885, demonstrates the balanced geometry and structural precision that defined late nineteenth-century English design. The two-tier form consists of a square top and lower shelf supported by four ring-turned legs, each tapering slightly toward its feet.
The upper tier has canted corners softened by shaped corner brackets, details that combine refinement with strength. The lower shelf is neatly framed between the legs, joined without visible fixing, providing stability and compositional balance. The rhythm of the turning, with fine collar rings and graduated shafts, lends quiet ornament through structure rather than embellishment.
