Arts and Crafts Glasgow School c.1900 Inlaid Oak Card Table with Square Top
POA
A square Arts and Crafts card table attributable to the Glasgow School, rendered in oak with a restrained, rectilinear profile typical of Scottish design c.1900. The top presents a plain field enclosed by a neat inlaid border, read as a quiet frame that defines the playing surface. Slender square legs are lightly chamfered to soften the edges while keeping the geometry crisp. An H-shaped underframe ties the legs and improves rigidity; the central rail features a shaped opening that adds a subtle note of lightness. The economy of line, reliance on proportion, and limited ornament reflect Glasgow School priorities, in which structure is allowed to read clearly and decoration remains subordinate to function. Intended for cards or small table games, the format is practical yet disciplined, aligning with wider British Arts and Crafts ideals of honest material and straightforward construction.
