Bruce Talbert, attributed. Stamped Gillows – Aesthetic Movement Oak Armchair
£3,000
Oak armchair attributed to Bruce Talbert and stamped by Gillows c.1880, Aesthetic Movement, with carved arches, turned legs, and blue damask upholstery.
This oak armchair, attributed to Bruce Talbert and stamped by Gillows, reflects the sculptural precision and ornamental restraint of the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1900). Its composition embodies Talbert’s distinctive integration of architectural line, carved motif, and proportioned massing, hallmarks of his late Victorian design language.
The upper rail is carved with a series of shallow half-moon details framed by tramline moulding, the form surmounted by turned finials. The backrest, upholstered in light blue damask, is supported by incised uprights enclosing a set of arched cut-outs linked by three small turnings. The generous seat rests between moulded rails with padded armrests above turned front legs, each terminating in the original brass and ceramic castors.
Professionally reupholstered, the chair preserves the crisp geometry and rhythmic detailing central to Talbert’s aesthetic philosophy and Gillows’ technical execution.
