Bruce Talbert attrib., by Gillows – Aesthetic Movement Ebonised Walnut Armchair
£3,400
This ebonised walnut armchair, attributed to Bruce Talbert and made by Gillows, represents the refined structural discipline of the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1900). Its form balances geometric clarity with decorative restraint, emblematic of Talbert’s integration of Gothic-derived line and proportion into domestic furniture.
Turned finials crown the uprights, joined by a shallow-carved headrest with half-moon detailing contained between tramline and gilded ornament. The upholstered backrest is flanked by incised uprights with turned accents and shaped opposites enclosing four arched details united by three small turnings. The padded armrests extend to a generous seat, supported by turned front legs on the original brass and ceramic castors, the rear legs slightly splayed to stabilise the stance.
Professionally reupholstered in keeping with the chair’s architectural symmetry, the piece demonstrates Gillows’ precision joinery combined with Talbert’s disciplined decorative vocabulary.
