Cast Iron and Wrought Iron Fireplace Andirons with Scroll Bases, c.1885
£2,800 / set
A pair of large cast and wrought iron fireplace andirons, late nineteenth century c.1885. The design combines tall upright finials with a broad, low base in a form intended for substantial open hearths.
Each upright rises in a tapering line to a rounded finial, the surface showing light diagonal tooling marks consistent with hand-wrought work. The lower sections comprise shaped feet united by pronounced double scrollwork formed from flattened iron, giving the pair a balanced and stable stance. To the rear, extended back rests measuring approximately 20 inches are set to support a large fire grate when in use.
The mixture of cast and wrought components reflects typical late Victorian fireplace construction, where strength, fire resistance and visual coherence were combined across large domestic interiors.
